PROJECT INFORMATION PART I (INTRODUCTION)

BWONDHA CHEECA FARMERS COOPERATIVE (BCFC) is a local farmers group based at Bwondha town council formed with an aim of improving the lives of small holder farmers in Mayuge district and beyond. The cooperative has a small membership of less than 100members but project will engage many households (thousands) into its membership in the coming 2 – 5 yrs.

This cooperative was formed as a social enterprise of CHEECA UGANDA community based development organisation which in future will be registered as a local NGO serving the interest of the local population.

The word CHEECA comes from ‘Community Health, Education And Environmental Conservation Agency’ . Hence CHEECA UGANDA is an abbreviation as stated above.

Therefore the Hands against hunger and poverty project is being developed by Bwondha Cheeca Farmers Cooperative (daughter organisation) as the lead organisation and cheeca Uganda (mother organisation) as the assistant organisation. This is done for purposes of resource mobilization including the diaspora. The NGO will play a fundamental role in mobilizing resources through its website for community benefit.

PROJECT RATIONALE

The ‘HANDS AGAINST HUNGER AND POVERTY PROJECT’ (HHP) is basically a poverty alleviation project started, developed and implemented by Bwondha Cheeca Farmers cooperative society ltd, a registered cooperative based at Bwondha landing site (town council), Mayuge district, eastern Uganda.
The main reason why this project was planned was to contribute to SDG 1 and SDG 2 at community level (ending hunger and poverty) in Mayuge district and beyond Mayuge if resources allow, reaching out to families in one sub –county at a time.

In this project, we are looking at having 6 sub – counties in bunya south constituency with 500 families per sub – county having an acre of coffee or cocoa in good condition and at least a good number of other families adopting poultry and fish farming as a business, earning above 6,000,000shs annually (equivalent to 500,000shs per month) from their agricultural businesses. And this is what we define as “ENDING POVERTY”
