CHEECA Uganda (Community Health, Education and Environmental Conservation Agency - Uganda) is a Christian Community based development organization started in 2013 at Bwondha Landing site to address a vast number of community needs and challenges in fishing and rural communities of Mayuge district and other poor parts of Uganda.
The organization was started by Mr. Kwiri Stanley, a health worker, who after establishing a simple clinic called Suubi Medical Centre in February 2011 at Bwondha identified so many community needs that needed urgent intervention.
With a population of over 40,000 people confined in a slum - like settlement, of which more than half of this population are less than 18 years of age; Many Children would die before their 5th birthday due to diarrhea, malaria, pneumonia and other preventable/treatable diseases; immorality was at its peak leading to poor family bonds, early pregnancies, child marriages and high HIV & STIs rate and related deaths. In fact 80% of the girls would plan to be pregnant before celebrating their 18th birthday. At that time, families were majorly relying on fishing leading to starvation, malnutrition and stunted growth of children during uncertainties. With fishing as the major economic activity, almost 90% of the children would never get a chance for an award of a secondary ordinary level certificate of education!
